The clients contacted us shortly after moving into a recently renovated apartment in Lower Manhattan. They did not want to “renovate”, yet the apartment was unlivable without additional elements to accomodate diverse activities and contain a variety of objects and equipment.

We proposed a strategy of wrapping each room in a manner which would accommodate and absorb these activities and objects. Plan and section transform to take on thickness or slimness as required, surfaces fold down to create seating or up to support additional shelving.

At places where the body, and particularly hands, come in contact with the millwork, special profiles have been inserted. carved recesses at windows, a carved and leather wrapped profile at the writing desk, sculpted mounds inserted into the counter to hold papers, access panels, hinted at by “bowling-ball” fingerholes... Details which invite a sensual contact with the built.
